El Louis and other Post Pachuco Dreams

It's closing night at the Rainbow Room..... Composer/Director Daniel Valdez re-examines the work of Chicano Royal Air Force poet, Jose Montoya, beginning with the tale of El Louie, a Korean War vet and an OG pachuco. This beautiful examination of the glory and tragedy of Chicano street life is a classic of Chicano literature. Set on the last night of El Rainbow Ballroom, the play features a parade of the musicos, the cantantes, the lovers, dreamers and fools that passed through its doors.

Based on the poems of Jose Montoya
Adapted by Daniel Valdez and Anthony J. Garcia.

Todo lo Mejicano / Everything Mexican

From the eerie to the absurd, great stories and characters come to life based on short stories told by great Mexican writers. What happens when a discovered pre-columbian artifact of the god Chac Mool turns out to be the real god? Or when a stranded passenger on a commuter train route is guided circuitously nowhere as he attempts to travel from town A to B? A strange invitation from a widow and her daughter present a unique dining experience for a social climbing young man that could result in an eternal seat at the table. A happy newlywed wife pondering married life quickly moves from bliss to outrage, as she prepares the evening dinner for her beloved husband.

Chicanos Sing the Blues

What happens at the intersection Big Mama Thornton and Lydia Mendoza? Poet master revolutionary Gil Scott-Heron says that there are at least 500 shades of the blues, so there must be in the brown blues. If you're Latino you can't be in love unless you're miserable: we have corridos and boleros attesting to this fact. It is the story of urban Chicano music influenced by African-American rhythms.
